Rules for Compositors and Readers

“Hart’s Rules” from the Clarendon Press (OUP) 1893

Encoded to TEI P5 XML.

This copy of Horace Hart’s Rules for Compositors and Readers was taken from a broadside edition published internally in the Clarendon Press (OUP) in 1893. It was republished in 1994 in facsimile by the Printing Historical Society and distributed with the Spring 1994 issue of Printing Historical Bulletin. Hart”s Rules went on to become a standard in the printing and publishing business in the UK and elsewhere and is still available —now as a book — as the authoritative guide for writers and editors.

The PHS facsimile measures 240mm wide by 543mm high. This edition is encoded in XML to the P5 version of the Text Encoding Initiative (TEI), from which the following transformations have been generated:

Original text (1893) is now Public Domain. This XML edition is published under the Creative Commons licence with Attribution, Non-Commercial, Share-Alike attributes (CC BY-NC-SA).

This is a late draft. It contains errors, and there are some unresolved items in the encoding and formatting which need discussion. The XSLT scripts and the LaTeX style file are available on request from Peter Flynn.

Thanks go to Lou Burnard for a rapid response to my markup errors.
